A Conflagration of Hasty Voices: Underworld Symbolism in Beloved
My First Public Lecture on Morrison’s Beloved
I’m excited to announce my first lecture with Morbid Anatomy, taking place online on Sunday, June 16.
Titled “A Conflagration of Hasty Voices:” Underworld Symbolism in Beloved, this talk investigates how Toni Morrison crafts mythic space from sites of trauma and memory. We’ll look closely at the Ohio River, 124 Bluestone Road, and the surrounding forest as thresholds to the underworld, both in the ancient mythic sense and within a lineage of Black diasporic mourning.
We’ll also explore how Morrison draws from Greco-Roman mythology, Judeo-Christian motifs, and depth psychology to shape a story that is as much about loss as it is about transformation.
This talk is for anyone who sees literature as a vessel for healing, myth-making, and ancestral memory.
